I got up feeling refreshed took a shower and when down for coffee. After a lukewarm cup of coffee, I headed to San Felipe Del Moro Castle. The scenic 15 minute walk overlooking the ocean lead me to this historic castle. Before you enter the castle, you must walk along this esplanade about a quarter mile until you reach the entrance. I mention it because as you see the video presentation of the Castle, you realize any invading army before they came upon the castle had to run this esplanade as canon and musket fire rained down on you. You really need to be committed or just plain committed to a cause to attempt such a fool hardy act.
I am going to put a link in, rather than go through the history. My impression of the fort with its seven foot thick walls, along with various moats, and multiple tiers defense fortifications is a wonder to behold. As you stand on the battlements, or walk out onto the lookout perches and you can visual the English Warships coming into the harbor attempting to soften up the fort for a land attack. The well defended Castle never fell. not until TR and the rough riders along with American Warships made Puerto Rico its own.
