San Cristobal castle

These are from the wonderful San Cristobal Castle. A protective fortification on the opposite end of the Harbor for the defensive of creating a crossfire with the earlier Castle.

Injury prone....

Would not say today was my lucky day. The the morning visiting castle San Christobal. This castle fort stood guard over the coast in position to provide crossfire with San Felipe. There was much more access to the various tunnels, dungeons, quarters and battlements. I spent over two hours walking throughout the massive fort.
I cut my finger holding on to the railing which produced a good amount of blood that I got some band aides for the cut. I then got a splinter on the wooden railing walking down the stairs. Finally, walking in Old San Juan after the castle, I feel my leg going into a deep hole, instinctively to my amazement, I grabbed onto the sigh pole and kept myself for getting seriously hurt falling into an open hole. I realize, I need to get a drink and walk back to the hotel to take it easy. Today is not my day..

More Castle photos

Sentry box

Narrow walkway....

400 years and counting

I got up feeling refreshed took a shower and when down for coffee. After a lukewarm cup of coffee, I headed to San Felipe Del Moro Castle. The scenic 15 minute walk overlooking the ocean lead me to this historic castle. Before you enter the castle, you must walk along this esplanade about a quarter mile until you reach the entrance. I mention it because as you see the video presentation of the Castle, you realize any invading army before they came upon the castle had to run this esplanade as canon and musket fire rained down on you. You really need to be committed or just plain committed to a cause to attempt such a fool hardy act.
I am going to put a link in, rather than go through the history. My impression of the fort with its seven foot thick walls, along with various moats, and multiple tiers defense fortifications is a wonder to behold. As you stand on the battlements, or walk out onto the lookout perches and you can visual the English Warships coming into the harbor attempting to soften up the fort for a land attack. The well defended Castle never fell. not until TR and the rough riders along with American Warships made Puerto Rico its own.

Evening stroll in old San Juan

Not wanting to eat at the Inn, I decided to take a walk into San Juan and see what I could find. The small city which is the most visited in the Caribbean has an old colonial world decadence to its architecture. Multi-colored houses, with wrought iron balconies overhang the narrow concrete sidewalks that can barley fit two people across. Steep inclines and declines, with uneven cobblestone streets buckling from the heat, salt and moisture make walking an adventure. I would like to see the woman who could high heel her way to a night on the town walking in San Juan. The streets were quiet as I walked over the most Historic Hotel on the island a converted convent compete with stain glass windows. I made my entrance into the marble lobby to look for a Tapas bar that I heard much is written. After having a glass of awesome Sangria, I ordered this goat cheese and tomato sauce with baked pita bread that was divine. The city felt safe as I continued my walk down narrow streets.

Settling in...

Finally, after setting up the the room, I began to feel the need to relax. My room has a small queen bed with antique tables and clothes closet. It is considered one of their hideaway rooms. It is Located on the second floor down a short set of steps the creaky wood door opens up to a cave like room with wonderful AC. However, with an old building like this the walls are too thick for proper room wifi but who cares with all this charm.
I headed to the sculpture heated, saltwater pool. No one was around, as I took a wonderful calm water moment. I love being around waited but am not crazy being in ocean. After relaxing among the beautiful Parrots for a spell, I went back to the room to shower and go for a walk.

The Gallery Inn.

After spending an hour on the runway, we finally took off. I felt rush of excitement as I disembarked into the terminal. Bright sunlight streaming through, as shops of every description surrounded me. Large numbers of people hustled to their predetermined destination. I took it all in before searching for some coffee and a bathroom. Airports excite me, as I love everything that goes on. I arrived at the hotel after a short cab drive. I checked in, unpacked, wash up, and then headed to the empty pool for a swim. Here are some photos of the Inn.

Leading up & the day of..

I was excited as I made my reservation about 10 days ago. However, as the date drew near, I began having generalized feelings of being down in the dumps. I should have realized when I begin having those feelings for no situational reasons I usually get sick with a cold or worse. Yes, I got a cold that spread to my lungs. Luckily, I had antibiotics and starting taking the set last week. Today, on my day of flying I took my last one.
The felt the excitement of a new journey as I finalized my last bit of packing the charged electronics. I felt a little rush which is strange since I am never late, or I should say seldom. The ride to the airport was uneventful.

My Wife, partner and friend...

This first post is for her who supports my lust and NEED for travel with her recommendations, understanding, and taking care of the responsibilities with the house. My first umbrella drink when I arrive will be for you.
Love you!
